The College Experience students are gaining valuable insight on business skills thanks to their instructor, Edith “Plummy” Chase in a new class called, “Sweet Treats Café. Their business officially launched on Wednesday, February 14, 2018 (a.k.a. Valentine’s Day). The business is going to be set up in the Living Resources, Inc. cafetorium from now until May 9th, 2018 which is the last day of classes for the College Experience.  The Sweet Treats Café will be in operation every Monday through Wednesday from 11:30 a.m. until 1:00 p.m.

For their first day, they sold red-and-white, half-moon cookies and assorted Valentine’s Day treats organized in festive bags. This unique class allows them to work on money skills, how to operate a cash register, proper customer service, and working on pricing of the items to ensure a reasonable profit. The proprietors of the Sweet Treats Café are featured in a photograph along with Plummy. Sarah says that it is fun to communicate to people and try new things. Lonnika states that she wants to gain more independence, and it is a wonderful class. Reed operated the cash register throughout much of the day, and the students are going to rotate jobs. He ended each transaction with a smile and said, “Thank you for supporting the College Experience.”

Customers should be prepared to enjoy a variety of baked goods and beverages from the Sweet Treats Cafe every Monday and Wednesday that include coffee cake, apple turnovers, croissants, hot chocolate, and gourmet tea. Everyone should feel free to also provide suggestions about what type of treats they would like to see at the Sweet Treats Café. All proceeds from the Café are going directly to the College Experience and will be used to fund a trip to Boston this summer so the students may enjoy a trip to the Boston Aquarium as well as a shopping expedition throughout Quincy Market.

Plummy and the students wish to give well-deserved credit to one of the other instructors. Fern Pivar worked with them to create the flyers and the display for the Sweet Treats Cafe using her promotional skills.
