Field Work Instruction

In addition to the College Experience courses, students receive educational opportunities designed to enhance the coursework in the form of fieldwork. Taught by Living Resources staff, these classes provide students the opportunity to improve their skills in areas like transportation, budgeting, cooking, fitness, community integration and socialization.

Beginning Cooking is a course for those students with little to no experience in the kitchen. The main focus will be on learning how to use the appliances, learning the names of the kitchen tools and kitchen safety. Students will learn how to cook basic foods independently. Food groups, healthy choices and portion control will be discussed.

Intermediate Cooking is a course for students with some kitchen experience and knowledge of food preparation. Review of kitchen safety and tool use will be included. Students will learn how to prepare multi-step balanced meals. Food groups, healthy choices and portion control will be discussed.

College Survival provides an opportunity for students to learn their way around the Saint Rose campus and their community. Students will learn and practice taking the bus until they can confidently and independently ride the bus. Bus routes to popular destinations, such as Crossgates Mall, Colonie Center and the Times Union Center will be taught. Students will have input on what routes they explore.

Relationships class is a course that allows students to openly discuss topics of interest including but not limited to: hygiene, self-esteem, relationships, dating, sexual intercourse and sexual abuse. Social skills will be discussed during this time as well. Possible topics include small talk, conflict resolution and coping skills.

Apartment Life is a hands-on workshop for students to practice the skills required for independent living. Topics may include but are not limited to: household maintenance, environmental services, laundry care, medical management and achieving a balanced lifestyle.

Fitness This class gives students the opportunity to participate in and learn about a variety of workouts. Some of the sessions offered are: personal training in the fitness center, basketball, outdoor sports and aerobics.

Lab is a small group workshop for students to continue to practice life skills. Students determine the skills they need more assistance and practice with. Topics may include: menu planning, travel training, event planning and problem solving.
